Course Description

Level 3 & 4

Elective PE

The elective Physical Education course in S3 will be very much practical in nature where pupils’ work primarily at experiencing the Level 4 outcomes in Physical Education. A range of practical activities will be covered throughout the year such as: dance, gymnastics, badminton, basketball, outdoor games and leadership. Learners will begin to analyse both their own and others performance in detail. Learners will develop their analytical skills in identifying performance strengths and weaknesses before investigating ways to develop performance through appropriate practice and training methods. Learners will also work at developing their communication skills, both written and verbal. This course will act as a spring board to National Qualification in S4.

Junior Sports Leaders
The Junior Sports Leadership qualification (SL4) is an introduction to sports leadership for pupils in S2 and above. SL4 is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to assist in leading purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity, under direct supervision.

The course is designed to use sport and physical activity to help young people develop and hone their leadership skills whilst helping themselves and others stay physically active.
Learners will develop skills in communication, leadership, teamwork problem solving and self-management. In addition pupils will develop their confidence which will help them to become more employable and help lead others whilst becoming role models for other students and improving links with local community through the leadership hours undertaken.
The course includes theory work through the Sports Leader UK booklets, development of leadership skills, practical application of leadership skills with pupil’s peers/younger pupils and practical lessons to develop confidence and skill level in various activities.

Course Assessment

Sports Leaders have provided an easy to use Learner Evidence Record (LER) for this qualification. The LER is mandatory and uses the following assessments:

Unit 1 – Establishing leadership skills
Unit 2 – Plan, assist in leading and review sport/physical activity
Unit 3 – Lead activities which promote a healthy lifestyle

All Sports Leaders must complete practical leadership in an environment out with the course.
Sports Leader Level 4 – At least 1 hour of practical leadership covering:
The Assisting in leading at least 1 x 15 minute sport/physical activity session

Progression and Careers

All pupils will have the opportunity to progress onto studying appropriate National Qualifications in S4.
Looking further ahead, many employers, colleges and universities look fondly at qualifications in Physical Education for many different careers due to both the health aspect and the additional skills associated with the subject such as leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Careers directly related include, Teaching, Sports Coaching, Sports Physio Therapy,  Sports Psychology, Health and Fitness Industry
