Level 3 & 4
Elective PE
The elective Physical Education course in S3 will be very much practical in nature where pupils’ work primarily at experiencing the Level 4 outcomes in Physical Education. A range of practical activities will be covered throughout the year such as: dance, gymnastics, badminton, basketball, outdoor games and leadership. Learners will begin to analyse both their own and others performance in detail. Learners will develop their analytical skills in identifying performance strengths and weaknesses before investigating ways to develop performance through appropriate practice and training methods. Learners will also work at developing their communication skills, both written and verbal. This course will act as a spring board to National Qualification in S4.
Junior Sports Leaders
The Junior Sports Leadership qualification (SL4) is an introduction to sports leadership for pupils in S2 and above. SL4 is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to assist in leading purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity, under direct supervision.
The course is designed to use sport and physical activity to help young people develop and hone their leadership skills whilst helping themselves and others stay physically active.
Learners will develop skills in communication, leadership, teamwork problem solving and self-management. In addition pupils will develop their confidence which will help them to become more employable and help lead others whilst becoming role models for other students and improving links with local community through the leadership hours undertaken.
The course includes theory work through the Sports Leader UK booklets, development of leadership skills, practical application of leadership skills with pupil’s peers/younger pupils and practical lessons to develop confidence and skill level in various activities.
Course Assessment
Sports Leaders have provided an easy to use Learner Evidence Record (LER) for this qualification. The LER is mandatory and uses the following assessments:
- Practical observation – video/photos can be used to support this
- Questioning of underpinning knowledge – via worksheets
- Plans and evaluations completed during the course
Unit 1 – Establishing leadership skills
Unit 2 – Plan, assist in leading and review sport/physical activity
Unit 3 – Lead activities which promote a healthy lifestyle
All Sports Leaders must complete practical leadership in an environment out with the course.
Sports Leader Level 4 – At least 1 hour of practical leadership covering:
The Assisting in leading at least 1 x 15 minute sport/physical activity session
- Completion of an additional 1 hour demonstration of leadership
- Use at least 3 different verbal communication methods
- Use at least 3 different nonverbal communication methods
- Use at least 3 motivational methods

Progression and Careers
All pupils will have the opportunity to progress onto studying appropriate National Qualifications in S4.
Looking further ahead, many employers, colleges and universities look fondly at qualifications in Physical Education for many different careers due to both the health aspect and the additional skills associated with the subject such as leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Course Description
Performance
This aims to develop candidates’ ability to perform in physical activities by enabling them to acquire a comprehensive range of movement and performance skills. They learn how to select, use, demonstrate and adapt these skills. Candidates develop control and fluency during movement to enable them to meet the physical demands of performance in a safe and effective way. The course offers opportunities for personalisation and choice in the selection of physical activities.
Factors impacting on performance
This aims to develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the factors that impact on performance in physical activities. Candidates consider the effects of mental, emotional, social and physical factors on performance, and acquire an understanding of how to plan, monitor, record and evaluate the process of performance development.
Course Assessment
Component 1: Portfolio. This contributes to 50% of the overall course award and is marked out of 60.
The Portfolio is broken down into three units.
Section 1: Understanding factors that impact on performance.
Section 2: Planning, developing and implementing approaches to enhance personal performance
Section 3: Monitoring, recording and evaluating performance development
Component 2: Performance. This contributes to 50% of the overall course award and is marked out of 30 (60 total). Pupils select their two chosen activities that they wish to be assessed in. The performance assessment is broken down in to sections:

Course Description
The course content covers the main practical activities involved in carrying out a supportive role in sport and recreation environments: sourcing information about career pathways, identifying and reviewing skills and experiences; assisting with planning, setting up and delivering activity sessions; dealing effectively and courteously with clients; assisting with emergency procedures; assisting with setting up, dismantling and checking equipment and resources; helping to plan and review a training programme; and establishing good practice in identifying and reviewing goals. The course also covers health and safety legislation and risk assessment.
Unit 1 – Assist with fitness programming: deliver 6-8 fitness session to a client
Unit 2 – Assist with a component of activity sessions: deliver 4 activity related sessions to class
Unit 3 – Assist with daily centre duties: placement
Unit 4 – Employment opportunities in the sport and recreation industry: research project
Assessment
This course is internally assessed and pupils must achieve all units in order to gain the full qualification.
Course Description
The Higher PE course provides candidates with the opportunities to develop and enhance their movement and performance skills. They develop knowledge and understanding and apply this to the analysis and evaluation of performance in physical education. Candidates develop their thinking skills through planning, problem solving and analysing performances.
Course Assessment
Component 1: Question Paper Exam. This exam is 2 and ½ hours long, marked out of 50 and contributes to 50% of their overall award. It is broken down in to sections.
Section 1: 32 marks
Covers all four factors (mental, emotional, social and physical) Students will be expected to have knowledge of the following aspects: • Factors impacting on performance • Data collection • Approaches used to develop performance • Method for monitoring and evaluating
Section 2: 6-10 marks
Personal development plans on the two different factors which must be over a minimum of three sessions
Section 3: 8-12 marks
Scenario could come in the form of a table, text, image or graph. Scenario will look for students to solve a performance problem or challenge.

Course Description
The Advanced Higher Physical Education Course enables learners to research and critically evaluate factors which underpin and impact on performance, and use this knowledge to develop their own high-level performance and/or the performance of others.
Course Assessment
Component 1: Research project. The purpose of the project is to assess the learner’s ability to integrate and apply skills, knowledge and understanding from across the units. The project will have 70 marks and contributes to 70% of their overall award. The project is designed to assess learners’ research and investigation skills, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and understanding to performance development. This research could be into a topic which impacts either on the learner’s performance, or the performance of another person, team or group.
