Established in 1641

Dunoon Grammar School was founded in 1641. ‘Benmore’ is one of the school’s four Houses.

Ben More is the largest hill in Cowal at 2433ft. (741m.) high. Beinn Mhor translates as ‘big hill’. From it’s summit it is possible to see Dumbarton Rock, Glasgow and even Jura. It is thought to be part of the Druim n’Alban, a ridge of mountains which in the early medieval north marked the frontier between the Picts of the east and the Gaelic speakers of Dál Riata in the west.

Benmore gardens was once part of the hunting grounds of the Dukes of Argyll. It was opened by the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh in 1929 at The Benmore Younger Botanic Gardens, having been donated to the nation by Harry Younger in 1924.
