Broad General Education (S1-3) French/ German/ Spanish

FRENCH/GERMAN/SPANISH

S1:

French only (3 periods / week)

Pupils continue learning French, their first foreign language.  We begin with a short block of revision lessons on basic topics.

Module 1: Talking about self and others, including description of personality and appearance, likes and dislikes.  Pupils meet some forms of the verbs avoir (to have) and être (to be), and learn how adjectives such as “tall”, “small” are used in French.

Module 2: School – pupils learn vocabulary and language for talking about school and school routines.  Again there is an emphasis on building up vocabulary knowledge, but pupils also start to use slightly more complex sentences.

Module 3: Leisure – more vocabulary building, and pupils become familiar with a wider range of verbs.  Pupils are taught how regular verb patterns work so that they can talk about their leisure interests.

S2:

French/ German/ Spanish (4 periods / week in total)

Pupils continue learning French as their main foreign language throughout S2.  They also get an introduction to German and Spanish (in rotation, half a year per language)

In French, the topics are home area, going on holiday and health/ lifestyle and routines, including a special focus on the life of a refugee.

S3:

French/ German/ Spanish (3 periods / week)

Pupils are expected to study at least one foreign language. More able linguists are recommended to study more than one.

The topics studied are relevant to pupils’ lives and experiences – for example, healthy living, use of social media, leisure time, employment and future plans. There will also be a film study, which has proved popular so far. S3 also provides an important grounding in grammar with some understanding of verbs and tenses which will be required in S4.
