Established in 1641

Dunoon Grammar School was founded in 1641. ‘Hafton’ is one of the school’s four Houses.

The Hunters of Hafton Castle were a rich family from Hunterston in Ayrshire, who can trace their roots there back as far as the 12th century, when King David I granted them their ancestral lands. The Hunters used their wealth to buy more land in South Cowal and in the early 1800s, James Hunter built Hafton Castle. The Hunters would use their wealth to play a significant role in the development of Dunoon through the 19th and 20th centuries. They paid for the construction of Dunoon’s wooden pier in the 1870s and oversaw the construction of a quay in Camasrainich Bay which would carry their name. The Hunter family are also remembered through a street name in Dunoon.
