Established in 1641

Dunoon Grammar School was founded in 1641. ‘Milton’ is one of the school’s four Houses.

Dunoon’s East Bay was originally Milton Bay, named after the Milton burn which flows out through the back of Black’s bakery. Much of the land in Milton Bay was owned by the Campbells – the Dukes of Argyll. They sold this to a local miller, Mr MacArthur Moir, who became the Laird of Milton. He built Milton House as his mansion, which today is a Council office sited at the top of Ferry Brae. Milton Bay got its name from being a ‘Mill Town’, named after Mr MacArthur Moir’s business. The Laird of Milton’s names are remembered through street names in Dunoon.
