S3 BGE Home Economics

Course Outline: 
The Scottish and local catering hospitality industries are large, vibrant and growing. The purpose of this course is to develop learners’ practical cookery skills and aims to enable learners to:
Become familiar with a range of cookery skills
Understand ingredients and the impact of ingredients on health and wellbeing
Follow recipes to produce dishes
Plan and produce meals and present them appropriately
Develop understanding of food safety and hygiene
Course Outline
Courses in S3 will deliver experiences and outcomes, which will prepare pupils for appropriate National Qualifications in S4.
The S3 Home Economics course will build upon the pupil’s prior knowledge in Practical Food skills, Food Safety and Scottish Dietary Targets. It will focus on giving the pupil a broad knowledge of each subject, and will include both theory and practical work. Home Economics will be suited to pupils who are interested in healthy living and developing practical food skills. It is a subject that can therefore be of practical use throughout life. Further, it is a subject that can open many doors to employment e.g. in education, the health services, and the growing hospitality industry.
